Minutes/Newsletter                                                      July 15, 2009

President, Dave Pasqualicchio Report:

Welcome all and continue to enjoy your vacations.  Summer has arrived. Relax and enjoy!

Dave reminds all, there is no meeting in August, see you all September 16th.  The FVA calendar moves quickly with many events to organize, so there is work ahead. FVA will decide whether to become involved with the Pumpkin Festival to be moved to downtown Forestville. The pumpkin festival previously was held in downtown Bristol.  Tom Dickau presently is poking around to see how much work it entails; however, if a FVA member would like to step up to chair the event, it would help bring this event to Central Square Forestville.

Dave reminds all, the Bristol Park and Recreation Concert returns to Forestville on August 11th.  It is one of the finest relaxing events on the FVA Calendar.   Please support this event.

The Rock Cat Baseball game had mixed reviews.  The game, with a 115 attendees and a profit of $461.00, was great.  The FVA members, who volunteered to work the food booth to make additional profit on this event, had their hands full.   Apparently, a lot more was expected at clean up time than anticipated, and some of the FVA volunteers felt they were shown very little support or respect during their 4 hours of continual work. The profit on the food concession will be announced when received and   perhaps a different proposition is in order, if we do this again, as a fundraiser.  FVA thanks all volunteers; Joan and Ron Trafford, Kate Matthews, Roy Diyulio, Mary Jane Johnson, Maryellen Holden, Marsha and Don Lockhart and “special thanks” to Patti Woolverton and Diane Mickulak for organizing and leading us in this event.

New faces in the crowd are Celeste and Sam Walters, Owners of Quality Welding on E. Main St. and new member, Geri Aronne. Welcome!

City Village Report:

Route 72 is progressing nicely. The transitioning of road intersections, turning lanes and the addition of sidewalks has really cleaned up many areas.

·        Tom Dickau is putting together additional information of the feasible sponsoring of the Pumpkin Festival.

·        Tom also notified FVA the 2009 Christmas ornament, Sarah E. Reynolds School, has been ordered.

·         Tom noted all duck t-shirts left over from the race have been redistributed to various city agencies.  They are appreciated.

·        Contact Paul Kowalczyk, webmaster, www.fvact.org   if you have information, pictures,   or links for the website. He has done a nice job with the website, keeping up with updates, links etc.

·        Leo Bonola reminds all, the Al Barnes 5th annual Memorial Golf Tournament was rescheduled due to inclement weather. The date is Thursday, September10, 2009.

·        Leo reported that members who have not renewed their membership will be dropped from the membership role.  Presently we have 178 residents and 47 businesses.

·        Monthly membership drawing was for a $25 gift certificate for City True Value Hardware.  The winning name drawn was Diversified Engraving, not present at the meeting.  At the next meeting, Sept.11th, six - $25 gift certificates will be available, but you must be present to win!!!

·        Earl Struble, addressed our group. He is a special individual who has begun his own crusade, sponsoring the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, with special designed care packages.  He has sent 507 packages in 6 years and finds it rewarding with the responses he receives.

Ř If anyone is interested in providing any of the items on the list or has questions or comments, make sure to contact Earl Struble at 860-585-7258.

Membership Drive:   “If You Like What You See, Join Us?”

Sign them up, bring in a new member.  We always accept new members. Dues are the main source of maintaining Central Square and beautification.

Beautification:

The staple of our community is to maintain property, beautify, enhance and encourage others to do the same. Dave has commented, he is very encouraged by the number of residents keeping their yards tidy. It looks great and he asks us to continue the work.  It all adds up to make a difference.

·        Shawn and Lucy Casey have completed the installation of bricks at Central Square.  Come down and check it out!

·        Since we always like to recognize deserving properties for beautification, if you have someone in mind, let us know!

·        Marguerite brought to our attention minor problems she found, the seal on light fixtures and mulch cover, as she reviewed Central Square.  They will be addressed.

Quinlan Park Project:

·        Concerning our park project and the sale of bricks, Pat Nelligan, representative of the Bristol Veterans Council and vice chairman of the Bristol Park Board, addressed FVA members. He stated, “The goal is to honor past, present and future veterans”.  He suggested we use the Veteran Council brick form with their website, because it is worldwide, in turn giving us more exposure. We must keep the sale price at $50. We need to complete the plan of the park   to be able to estimate the maximum number of bricks which we can sell. Keeping with format used at the Boulevard, bricks sold for Quinlan Veterans Park will be for Veterans only and will be inscribed only with Name and branch of service. For special requests of plaques, bench inscription etc. a written request must be submitted a year in advance for Veteran Council approval.

Thanks to Pat for addressing our group and clearing up questions FVA members had about the brick sales and memorials for Quinlan Park.

·        Marguerite informed us, the renovation will be broken down into phases. She has CBYD (call before you dig) to see if any wires or pipes could be a problem with the design. She said things are moving along well.

·        Betty Boukus suggested, the Quinlan Park committee send  a letter of request, for the amount of funding needed for the park.

Correspondence:  Welcome Lady, Maryellen Holden

·        Get Well to State Representative, Frank Nicastro on recent back surgery.

·        Sympathy notice to the Family of Desi Dechaine, a fascinating person. He will be missed.

·        Received a thank you from 2009 scholarship recipient, Kristen Welgarz.

Events:

·        For the 3rd year, Forestville Village Association will take part in the United Way “Adopt a Student” program. It includes buying a boy or girl a back pack, school supplies and outfit for school, providing positive motivation for the new school year.

·        A $50 donation was made to Saint Vincent DePaul Society, to benefit “Stamp out Homelessness”.

·        Parks and Recreation Summer Concert is scheduled for Tuesday, August 11th.   The time is 6:30 in Forestville a t the Ultimate Company.    There is no cost to attend. Take the opportunity to relax and listen to the sounds of area artists.

Please, attend our next meeting:

Wednesday, September 16, 2009 - 6pm at Nuchie’s
