Welcome. Are you enjoying the summer of 2010, no finer than this or has there been? FVA weather keepers, historians, what year was that? Then there are some of us missing those 40 degree days of winter. In a blink of an eye, summer will be over, the leaves will be falling from the trees, and the pumpkins will become Jack-o lanterns. Okay, enough; Merry Christmas!
Reminder, the FVA sponsored, City of Bristol Parks Department summer concert series returns to Forestville, Tuesday August 11th with the band Triple Dare.
On a sad note, Forestville Village and St. Matthew parish mourn the passing of Father Brian Monnerat. A moment of silence held for a man with a great presence in our community.
Once again, the United Way of Bristol has asked FVA if we would “Adopt a Child” by purchasing backpack, school supplies and clothing to help bolster a child’s self esteem and outlook on a good education.
The Forestville Post Office has reopened to the delight of this Forestville community. Hours have been reduced; sacrifice for convenience.
City Village Report:
Tom Dickau, FVA Historian, Pumpkin/Duck Man:
· Tom reminds all, the city 225 celebration continues with the Chippens Hill fireworks display at on August 15th.
· Tom was excited with the new leadership of Darlene Sawe, who is taking the Mum Festival forward.
· Great news! After mentioning he is interested in organizing the Pumpkin Festival, making it a Forestville Village event, Tom set the date, Oct. 16th for the Festival. With one year under our belt, he suggested numerous cost saving measures. FVA decided on a ceiling of a $1,000 investment. There was a suggestion to solicit the
Bristol community through producing a flyer.
· The Bristol Historical Society is holding a fundraiser raffle for a beautiful handmade quilt. The raffle tickets are $2.00 each and are available at Nuchie’s.
· FVA will sponsor a table at the Mum Festival Craft Fair; cost $25.00.
· The 2010 Christmas Ornament will show the old Forestville Fire Station on one side, with the present Fire Station on the other. Two hundred will be ordered. First come, first served, as always.
Leo Bonola Remarks:
· In sadness, Leo spoke about the great loss of Father Monnerat, saying he was a great friend, loved his church and had a big heart. Everyone admired him.
· Gail Leach won $25 in the monthly drawing and purchased raffle tickets for the Historical society quilt fundraiser.
· Leo asked FVA membership to support Bernie’s grandson, Matt Brozozowski and his project, in his quest for his Eagle Scout ranking. A $100 was awarded.
· FVA wished Penny Critchley a Happy Birthday. We sounded good in song, but then FVA pretty much is good at all we do!! Happy Birthday to Tom this month too!!
No Treasure’s report is available this month.
Nancy will provide a financial outline, heading into the final quarter.

Beautification:
· In the last newsletter, we failed to mention Penny Critchley, Gail Leach and Geri Reilly volunteered to trim and eliminate the overgrown plantings, surrounding some monuments in Quinlan Park. Their hard work cleaning up the area is truly appreciated, until the FVA renovation can take place. Thank you for a job well done!
· Central Square looks great! Check out the flowers at the base of the clock: Wow!
· It was suggested to place a notice in the Bristol Press, to the general public, if they would like to purchase a Central Square brick, Phase #3. Another idea is to place a sign on the property, indicating the sale of bricks.
· A certificate was mailed to Marsha and Don Lockhart for beautifying their Vernon /Garden Street corner lot with English Country Gardens. By example, encourage others to maintain their property and beautify their neighborhood.
Fundraising:
The Rock Cat game was held on Sunday July 25th. Since ticket sales were not as good as expected, Patti Woolverton mentioned FVA should come up with something different, as a fundraiser, for 2011.
Quinlan Park: “ A Place for Veterans to honor their own”
Marguerite presented an impressive over view of the Quinlan project, with final drawings, very detailed; a great plan. Along with Marguerite, Ed Swicklas, Bob Fletcher and Paul Kowalczyk were very instrumental in getting the project this far.
Now, how are we going to finance this project? FVA needs member input and ideas for a capital fundraising campaign. Do you have any ideas? Let us know. Let’s get started!
Remember, Brick Forms are now available at Nuchie’s. Tell everyone you know, the purchase price of each brick for Quinlan Veterans Park is $50. Each brick will be engraved with a Veteran’s name and branch of service only, but may be purchased by anyone.
Correspondence Report with Maryellen Holden:
· A get well card was sent to Kate Matthew’s mom, Mary Ann Lupa on her recent surgery, after the July meeting. It is with great sadness, we now send our condolences to Kate and her family on her mother’s passing on August 1st.
· Received a thank you from FVA Scholarship recipient, Kyle Percivich.
· Received an appreciation note from Kay Burke, outlining many nice comments on recent FVA activities. She included a check to pay for the cleanup crew, with a suggestion for a pickup of litter at the intersection of Pine and Central St.
· FVA business man, Gary Ritter, of Sawe’s Florist, stopped by to say Hello. He is doing fine.
Unfinished Business:
· For now, the pine tree in Central Square will remain.
· FVA will continue with the 9 monthly meetings, opting out of May/August/December
New Business:
· Bill Stortz suggested that because Bristol ranked 84th in the top 100 of best places to live, it would be an opportunity for FVA to be included in the Chamber’s new marketing plan for Bristol. Bill will inquire about it.
· Gary Lawton suggested a Police Sub Station in Forestville.
· At the duck race it was suggested FVA invest in a canopy to protect sale items and salespeople from the sun or possible rain. Rick Leach recommended we buy a white canopy for attractive protection from the elements. All were in favor. Paul Kowalczyk will price a 10X10 white
canopy.
